Bonnie Goben, of Sign Language Specialists in Lee’s Summit, MO conducted a project during the conference in which several deaf and hard of hearing conference attendees participated. The project involved taping the participants’ descriptions of mental illness for the purpose of training interpreters. http://www.signlanguagespecialists.com


Dr. Cindi Cassady of Deaf Community Services of San Diego presented with her colleague, Irvine Stewart, on “Deaf Teenz”, an HIV/AIDS education program for deaf and hard of hearing youth.


Chriz Dally of California presented on Shaping Deaf Children and their Families for Success.


Stefanie Day of the Ohio School for the Deaf presented with her colleague, Emily Jordan, on play therapy with families and behavioral interventions in a school setting using the UCC and Ziggurat Model. She also presented on Positive Behavior Supports in application to a school for the deaf.


Evon Black of Alabama, gave a performance “It Runz in the Family” on Saturday evening in Murphy Auditorium at Kansas School for the Deaf. The performance was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. The performance consisted of a lively and humorous mixture of short stories, all with a morale and celebrating diversity.

Ashley Koe of Dove Advocacy Services for Abused Deaf Women and Children in Denver, CO presented on the impact of domestic violence on families and teen dating violence.

Dr. Gabriel Lomas of Western Connecticut State University presented on the role of counselors for the deaf in public schools.

Stephen Weiner, Ed.D., Provost of Gallaudet University, presented on a potpourri of items, including the sharing of his experiences as a son observing his mother's experience with the mental health system of its time; an emphasis for counselors and mental health providers to be educated and culturally sensitive to mental health consumers from a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds; and an emphasis on counselors educating deaf students on international issues impacting our society to assist them in transitioning out of the education system to the working/postsecondary world.
